Visit the West Asheville Park’s Food Forest!

The Food Forest at West Asheville Park is a food forest planted ~2008/9 by a group of nutty volunteers who wanted more ecosystem (food and habitat) and less grass. It began and continues to be an experimental and educational food forest. The forest is on city owned land and is managed by Bountiful Cities through community volunteers.

There are over 20 edible and useful plants including: blueberries, mullberries, cherries, hazlenut, persimmon, gomi berry, hawthorn, American chestnut (backcrosses provided by the American Chestnut Foundation), paw paw, strawberries, thornless blackberries, elderberry, goji berry, blue comfry, and more!

The food forest was un-tended for at least 15 years and has recently been tended more consistently with pruning, new plantings (supported by Bountiful Cities!), mulching, and invasive control, however, there is still a lot more to do!
